Pick Any Day but Wednesday: The museum is closed on Wednesdays and your ticket is fixed to the date you choose. Friday and Saturday run until 9pm, so book one of those if you want an unhurried evening.
Travel Light: Large bags and luggage are refused at the door, and the free coat check can take half an hour at peak. Carry a small bag on your front and bring only water in a sealed bottle; other drinks are turned away.
Be on the Steps at 10am: The galleries are nearly empty for the first hour and packed by midday. Head straight to the wing you care about most, then browse.
Take the Paper Map and Pick Three Wings: Room after room, each with several doors, makes the layout a maze. Choose two or three areas and mark your route before you start.
Step Out for Lunch: Cafe lines run long and admission allows re-entry all day, so leave, eat nearby, and come back.

Infants and children must be included in the passenger headcount.
Children aged 0-12 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
Children aged 13+ will be charged the same rate as adults.

This tour includes extensive walking and numerous stairs. Please ensure you are physically prepared to join.
A bag check is available; please allow extra time to check your items before joining the tour.
Small backpacks are allowed but must be worn on the front or carried by hand. Large bags, luggage and oversize equipment are not admitted.
Water in a sealed bottle is the only drink allowed in; no other food or drink may be brought inside.
Admission covers same-day entry to The Met Cloisters as well, with re-entry allowed all day. It is not valid on another date.
Step-free entrances are at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street and through the parking garage at 80th Street. Manual wheelchairs can be borrowed at the 81st Street coat check on a first-come basis.
Strollers and front-facing baby carriers are welcome; jogging strollers and wagons are not allowed.
Non-flash photography for personal use is allowed in most galleries.
The Cantor Roof Garden and the Modern and Contemporary galleries are currently closed for renovation.

FAQs

Can I buy Met Museum tickets at the door?

Yes, the museum sells same-day tickets at its admission desks, but that is the slow queue; on weekends and rainy days it can stretch out of the door. A ticket bought online is scanned at the entrance and you walk straight through to the galleries, which is why booking ahead is the faster way in.
Is 2 hours enough for the Met?

Two hours covers one or two wings at a comfortable pace, and the ticket has no time limit, so you can stay from the 10am opening until closing. Admission is valid all day with re-entry, so you can break for lunch outside and come back for more.
What days is the Met open, and when is it quietest?

The Met Fifth Avenue is closed every Wednesday and on Thanksgiving Day, December 25, January 1 and the first Monday in May. It opens at 10am, closes at 5pm Sunday to Tuesday and Thursday, and stays open until 9pm on Friday and Saturday. Weekday mornings right after opening are the quietest; by midday the galleries fill up.
