  • Whilst at Sovereign Hill, visitors are responsible for the security of their own property. 
  • Bags may be subject to search. Unattended bags or packages are not allowed. Sovereign Hill reserves the right to deny entry or evict anyone who refuses a bag search.

  • Visitors who find gold in the creek by using Sovereign Hill’s traditional gold panning equipment may keep the gold they find.

By Car:

  • Located at 39 Magpie Street, Ballarat, just a 90-minute drive from Melbourne via the Western Freeway. Ample parking is available on-site.

By Train:

  • Take a V/Line train from Melbourne's Southern Cross Station to Ballarat Station (approximately 90 minutes). Sovereign Hill is a short 5-minute taxi or bus ride from the station.

By Bus:

  • Public buses run from Ballarat Station to Sovereign Hill. Check local bus schedules for Route 21 or Route 24.

  • What are your opening hours?

    Outside school and public holidays, we are open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.

  • Where is Sovereign Hill?

    Sovereign Hill is located in Ballarat, 90 minutes by car west of Melbourne. The address is Bradshaw Street, Ballarat.

  • Can I take a pram into the mine?

    No, due to accessing the mine on the inclined tramway. You can park the pram under the verandah of the hut next to where the tours start, and take your belongings with you.

  • Can I take a photo with the costumed staff?

    Inside the museum, you will interact with our staff dressed in costume from the 1850s. We encourage photos with our staff. Please ask politely and they will help you get the best picture.

  • Is the cafe at Sovereign Hill open?

    Yes, the modern cafe at Sovereign Hill has undergone exciting renovations to bring you an even better dining experience. It is now called Prospectors Table and offers hot or cold meals and drinks.

  • Can I take my baby or toddler with me?

    Yes, please book them a toddler ticket. This is free, and ensure they are counted in our group numbers.

  • Can I use a wheelchair in the mine?

    Mine access is currently restricted due to development. Some wheelchair users may access the mine via our inclined railway tram. Please consult our Tour Guide team at the Mine Hut for details on accessibility.
