The biggest zoo in Malaysia is the Zoo Negara (National Zoo). It covers 44 hectares (110 acres) of land on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur's city center. It houses over 5,137 specimens representing 476 different species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish.
Being Malaysia’s first national zoo, the Zoo Negara was once set in a virgin jungle, and now stands as an oasis in the midst of a concrete jungle. Over the years, the zoo has evolved into an open concept zoo, with over 90% of its animals housed in spacious exhibits with naturalistic landscapes.
With one or two exceptions, Malaysia has over 40 or so zoos that are places of appalling cruelty. Profits are always prioritized over animal welfare.
